Professor Niranjan Bidargaddi

Health system design, behavioural operations research, applied AI in clinical workflows.

Niranjan founded and directs the Health Systems Sandpit at Flinders University. His work spans behavioural science, digital health architecture, and the design of clinical decision support systems that work inside live health services. He is Chief Investigator on multiple MRFF national infrastructure grants, including AutoMedic and AutoReview, and leads the Capacity by Design research program through the Health System Design Lab.

Before founding the Sandpit he held senior research positions at Flinders and was part of the team that built the CareMappr platform, now operating across multiple South Australian health services.

Three Research Fellows. Three pillars of the method.

The Sandpit's design method has three pillars — Diagnose, Configure and Measure. Each is led by a Research Fellow with independent research agendas in their pillar's intellectual territory.

Diagnose pillar

Beck O'Hara

Research Fellow

Leads diagnostic methodology — how the Sandpit maps where capacity is lost in current workflows. Her independent research focuses on consumer experience and women's health intelligence distribution, anchored by the EndoZone program.

Configure pillar

Judith Hocking

Research Fellow

Leads configuration design — including the governance and safety frameworks for human–AI coupling in clinical workflows. Her independent research focuses on LLM safety and the design of governance scaffolds for generative-AI-assisted clinical reasoning.

Measure pillar

Lijun Zhao

Research Fellow

Leads measurement and evaluation methodology — how the Sandpit demonstrates that a configuration created capacity. Her independent research focuses on consumer sensing redistribution and health behaviour change in chronic conditions.

Pipeline operations

Lachie Pattison

Pipeline lead

First contact for new engagement enquiries. Coordinates the early-stage diagnostic intake and the matching of briefs to the relevant pillar lead. Manages the broader research-layer pipeline that connects external partners to the Sandpit's portfolio.

Project management

Simran Bhatia

Project Manager

Project management across active MRFF channels — including AutoMedic and AutoReview — coordinating delivery milestones, governance reporting, and partner engagement across health service sites.

The wider network the Sandpit operates within.

The Sandpit's work draws on a network of named collaborators and advisory connections — clinicians, statisticians, implementation scientists and senior health system leaders — who shape methodology, ethics, and translation pathways.
